How do I choose an inverter?

2023-10-11 16:30

A PV inverter is an important part of a PV power system, its main function is to convert the direct current (DC) electricity generated by the solar roof tiles into alternating current (AC) to supply electricity for domestic or industrial use. AC is the standard current available for household appliances, and your solar system will not function without an inverter in your solar system.

What does an inverter do?

Inverters act as the brains of the solar system and their main functions are:

Convert direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC)

Active operation and shutdown functions

Maximise power output tracking.

Communicate with the national grid.

Provide feedback about power production.

Common Classification of Inverters

There are four main types of solar inverters. Concentrating inverters, string inverters, and micro inverters. In the article, we will explore the characteristics of several common inverters. In this way, you won't be troubled by how to choose the inverter child of the Hop Ten.

1.Centralised inverters

Centralised inverters, as the name suggests, are used to boost and connect to the grid after converting the aggregated DC power generated by the PV modules into AC power. Therefore, the power of inverters are relatively large. Centralised inverters of 500kW or more are generally used in PV power plants.

2.String inverters

Several groups of PV strings are individually tracked for maximum power peak, with a large number of MPPTs, and then connected to the AC grid after inversion. The power of this type of inverter is relatively small, with a single power of 100KW or less, and with the advancement of technology and the increasing demand for cost reduction and efficiency, the power has gradually increased to 136KW, 175KW or more, and other products with larger power.

3.Micro inverter

Each PV module carries out individual maximum power peak tracking, and then is connected to the AC power grid after inversion by new energy generation. The single capacity of this kind of inverter is generally below 100KW, with the advantages of carrying out independent maximum power tracking and control on each module, improving the overall efficiency in the event of shading or differences in the performance of the modules, and minimising the security risks, etc. The centralised grid-connection is mostly used for large-scale PV projects.

Centralised grid-connection is mostly used for large-scale ground-based PV power stations facing the same direction, and string-type and micro-inverter grid-connection are the main types of grid-connection for PV roof systems.

Sgbsolar solar roof tiles are used on rooftops, and it is recommended that string-type and microinverter be the main types of grid connection.
