European Energy Efficiency Directive for Buildings comes into force, greatly benefiting business and industry

The EU Rooftop Solar Standard will apply to new non-residential and public buildings from 2027, to existing non-residential buildings undergoing major refurbishment from 2028, to new residential buildings from 2030 and to all suitable existing public buildings by 2031. The standard will specifically unlock the potential for large roofs, such as those installed on office buildings, commercial buildings or parking lots. Certain buildings, such as agricultural and historic buildings, may be excluded. Total installed rooftop solar capacity in Europe exceeded 170 GW by the end of 2023 and is expected to grow to 355 GW by the end of 2027. In addition to solar power installations that are mandated under solar standards, the growth of rooftop solar on homes is likely to increase as citizens seek to protect themselves from the volatility of fossil fuel prices.
