European Energy Efficiency Directive for Buildings comes into force, greatly benefiting business and industry

Buildings are the largest single consumer of energy in Europe. As such, the buildings sector is critical to meeting the EU's energy and climate targets.

Key facts about energy and EU buildings

85% of EU buildings were constructed before 2000 and 75% of them have poor energy performance. Acting on the energy efficiency of buildings is therefore key to saving energy, reducing bills for citizens and small businesses, and achieving a zero-emission and fully decarbonized building stock by 2050. These and the following facts are taken from the Eurostat Energy Balance and the EEA Greenhouse Gas Inventory 2023.

According to SolarPower Europe, the implementation of the new EU Rooftop Solar Standard could drive the installation of an additional 150GW to 200GW of rooftop solar capacity in the EU between 2026 and 2030. The standard will help to fully utilize the potential of EU rooftops, with the EU Joint Research Centre estimating the potential capacity of rooftop solar to be around 560GW, assuming that 60% of public buildings are suitable and fall within the scope of the EU Rooftop Solar Standard.

New laws requiring all new buildings to be solar-ready make the quest for solar power easier and more appealing. According to Bloomberg New Energy Finance (Bloomberg NEF), aggressive solar standards (as seen in some EU countries) can improve ROI by 8 to 11%, compared to after-the-fact installations. In addition, solar standards are expected to empower a broader societal dimension, reducing barriers to solar adoption in multifamily residential buildings.

The EU Rooftop Solar Standard will apply to new non-residential and public buildings from 2027, to existing non-residential buildings undergoing major refurbishment from 2028, to new residential buildings from 2030 and to all suitable existing public buildings by 2031. The standard will specifically unlock the potential for large roofs, such as those installed on office buildings, commercial buildings or parking lots. Certain buildings, such as agricultural and historic buildings, may be excluded. Total installed rooftop solar capacity in Europe exceeded 170 GW by the end of 2023 and is expected to grow to 355 GW by the end of 2027. In addition to solar power installations that are mandated under solar standards, the growth of rooftop solar on homes is likely to increase as citizens seek to protect themselves from the volatility of fossil fuel prices.

With the support of favorable policies, the trend of building rooftop solar applications is unstoppable, then enjoy the benefits of solar energy at the same time, many people also gradually have higher requirements for the aesthetics of the building, sgbsolar noticed this pain point in the building, so the roof tiles and photovoltaic panels are combined together - solar slate roof tiles!!!

You can think of it as a kind of roof tiles that generate electricity, with the shape and function of the tiles and at the same time also has the additional function of generating electricity, so that homeowners do not have to get solar energy for the appearance of the house of the two alleys and compromise, for some of the antique or renovation of the building can also be to maintain their original style, because solar slate roof tiles low-profile as if there is no such thing as a roof tile. tiles are so discreet that they don't exist. We have to say that this is a revolution and innovation in roof tiles.
